The Institute of the Incarnate Word

The IVE is a Catholic Religious Institute of Diocesan Right founded in Argentina on March 25, 1984 by Reverend Father Carlos Miguel Buela, the very same day that Saint John Paul II consecrated the entire world to Our Lady of Fatima.

Its members are priests, seminarians and coadjutor brothers. Our vocation is to follow Christ more closely under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. We want to dedicate ourselves totally to God as our supreme Love, seeking his Glory in a new and special way of life, for the edification of the Church and the salvation of souls.

We want to imitate Jesus Christ as perfectly as possible, principally by the fulfilment of our religious vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.

We choose to live chaste for the Kingdom of Heaven, poor to manifest that God is our only treasure, and obedient to the death of the cross, to follow more closely the Incarnate Word in his chastity, poverty and obedience.

In addition, we profess a fourth vow of Marian slavery, according to the spirit of St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort. By means of this vow, the members consecrate their whole lives to the Blessed Virgin Mary to ask her intercession and to prolong the Incarnation in the world. We want to be apostles of Mary entrusting ourselves to Her in by doing all things “through Mary, with Mary, in Mary and for Mary.” (Treatise of the True Devotion to Mary, n. 257).

We are a religious family, we profess solemn vows, and we live a fraternal life in community. We work to acquire a true human and Christian maturity, to be able to reach the full maturity in Christ (Eph 4: 13).

The IVE takes its name from the event of the Incarnation, which is “the first and fundamental mystery of Jesus Christ” (St. John Paul II). The Word of God came to the world, took a human nature and lived among us as man to save us.

We want to be like another incarnation of the Word, so that the Incarnation of Christ be present in all mankind, “to bring Christ to all things” (Eph 1: 10).

For that reason, our specific aim is the evangelization of culture , so that the Gospel can have its roots deep in the life and culture of each nation.

Therefore, we apply all our strength to inculturate the Gospel, i.e., to prolong the Incarnation of Christ “to all men, in the whole man, and in all of the manifestations of man”. (Constituciones 5), by rejecting all forms of sin and lies. (To see more, click here).

By imitating Christ, who became man, without losing his divinity, we want to learn to be in the world but without “being of the world”. We know we need to go to the world, but to convert it not to become one with it. We seek to go to the culture, and to the cultures of men, not to become one with them but to heal and elevate with the strength of the Gospel, doing as Christ did: "He supressed the diabolic, assumed the human and communicate the divine”.

We work in the key areas of culture to spread the message of the Gospel: in families, in education, in the mass media, in the schools, with the youth and in all other legitimate manifestations of human life.

We live an intense spiritual life that gets its strength from the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist in the celebration of the Mass and in the Eucharistic Adoration.

We place all our works in the maternal hands of the Mother of God. We try to overcome ourselves and our disordered passions through the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola; and trusting in God’s help we preach the Gospel of Christ wherever God send us. (To see more about our missions, click here).

We want to form virtuous men (“virtuous”, from Latin vir and vis: the strength of the man) according to the doctrine of great teachers of the spiritual life, especially Saint Augustine, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint John of the Cross, Saint Teresa of Jesus, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, and according to the examples of all the saints of all times that the Church proposes as models of virtue for us to imitate.

The intellectual formation of the IVE members consists of philosophical and theological studies (Biblical theology, Patristic theology, Dogmatic and Moral theology...) We give preference to the works of Saint Thomas Aquinas, and his best commentators, especially Fr. Cornelio Fabro, because the Church has declared that Aquinas’ doctrine is her own doctrine (Benedict XV, Encyclical Letter on the VII centenary of the birth of Saint Dominic, Fausto apetente die, 4b). (Click here to see more about our intellectual formation).

We are members of one and the same missionary religious family, and before anything else we are sons of the Church One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic that “breathes” with tow lungs: the East and the West .

We conduct apostolic work in places that belong to the Latin Church as well as to the Catholic Eastern Church. Therefore, there are members of our Institute who belong to the Eastern Rites and celebrate the sacraments in their respective rites.

The Institute has two branches, the apostolic and the contemplative. (Click here to learn more about the contemplative life). As one only family, we know that the Lord sends missionaries, confessors, spiritual directors, through the sacrifice and prayer of those who consecrate themselves to God in the contemplative life.

The sword : our mission is to preach. “They will have in their mouth the two edged-sword of the Word of God” (Treatise of the True Devotion to Mary).

The red Cross : all work gets its strength from Christ’s blood shed for our redemption.

The white background : is the symbol of the purity with which the works are done for God..

The Crown : represents the kingship of Christ.

The three flames : are the three evangelical counsels (vows of poverty, chastity and obedience).

The Fleur-de-Lis : signifies our fourth vow of consecration to the Holy Virgin Mary in maternal Slavery of love.

The letters V, C, F, E: Verbum Caro Factum Est (The Word [was] Made Flesh), since we are the Religious Family of the Incarnate Word. These words are found in the Gospel of John, where the Apostle describes the event of the Incarnation (cf. Jn 1: 14).

The rosary : indicates our devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, her maternal protection, and her presence in our lives and in our apostolic works.
